Product Overview
Model XLA1-23 is built around a single image: a red-brown bronze lady playing the guqin, her robe sweeping back. The piece is hollow-cast by the traditional lost-wax method, then patinated and sealed by hand, so a warm red-brown patina sits over crisp, hand-chased detail. At 440 × 370 × 1165 mm, it is designed for lobby floors and large entrance surfaces.
The cloud base is the series signature: curling, scalloped forms that lift the performer off the surface and make the sculpture feel weightless despite its bronze mass. It also gives the piece a stable footprint for cabinets and plinths.
Because every surface is patinated by hand before sealing, the finish has depth: brighter where the forms rise, deeper in the hollows. Placed on lobby floors and large entrance surfaces, the sculpture reads as a lived-in bronze object rather than a plated ornament, and it keeps its tone with nothing more than routine dusting.
Design Inspiration: The Dunhuang Performer
The most famous of these poses — playing the pipa behind the back — comes from the Dunhuang murals and has become shorthand for Chinese artistic confidence. This series borrows that energy: each lady performs on a cloud base, suspended between heaven and the living room, bringing blessing, festivity and a touch of the exotic to modern interiors.
Craftsmanship: Lost-Wax Casting and Hand Patina
The piece is produced by the traditional lost-wax method. Wax is modelled from the master, invested in a ceramic shell and burnt out, and molten bronze is poured into the cavity, so the finished casting is a hollow bronze shell rather than a solid block — lighter to handle, easier to place, and true to the way fine bronzes have been made for centuries. After casting, the surface is chased and polished by hand, then patinated in layered tones and sealed.
The red-brown patina is built in several translucent washes so the warmth varies across the figure — deeper in the folds, brighter on the raised limbs — before sealing; the cloud base is patinated separately in verdigris green for contrast.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does the cloud base symbolize?
In Chinese art, clouds mark the boundary between the earthly and the heavenly — performers standing on clouds are celestial musicians. It also lifts the figure visually, which makes the sculpture read lighter on a cabinet or plinth.
2. Is the red-brown tone the same on every piece?
The tone is a hand-applied patina, so it varies slightly from piece to piece — warmer or deeper in places. This variation is the mark of genuine hand finishing and is covered by our quality standard for display-grade bronzes.
3. Can I order this piece in a different color?
Yes. The finish shown is the standard patina of this model, but the same sculpture can be produced in other tones — warm brown, antique gold, verdigris green or a custom two-tone patina. Hand patina is our standard process, so an alternative finish does not significantly affect lead time.
4. Is each sculpture exactly the same?
The casting comes from the same mold, so the form is consistent. The patina, however, is applied by hand, which means slight variations in tone between individual pieces — a normal characteristic of genuine cast bronze.
5. What is the MOQ?
