Damo’s Enlightenment – Zen

Hollow-cast in bronze by the traditional lost-wax method, 356 × 150 × 470 mm, 1.8 kg. Golden Bodhidharma beneath a pine branch, finished with a hand-applied, sealed patina — ideal for desks, shelves and reception counters.

Product Overview

Among TYART’s animal bronzes, this bodhidharma stands out for the way a hand-applied patina plays over its forms: golden Bodhidharma beneath a pine branch. The modelling is calm and confident, built from broad planes that catch light along the silhouette. At 356 × 150 × 470 mm, it is sized for desks, shelves and console tops.

Where the model includes a bronze ring or pine branch, those elements frame the figure without touching it — negative space doing the storytelling.

Because every surface is patinated by hand before sealing, the finish has depth: brighter where the forms rise, deeper in the hollows. Placed on desks, shelves and console tops, the sculpture reads as a lived-in bronze object rather than a plated ornament, and it keeps its tone with nothing more than routine dusting.

Design Inspiration: Stillness in a Restless World

Bodhidharma — Damo — is the patriarch of Zen: the monk who sat facing a wall for nine years, and the face of the mindfulness now practiced in homes and offices across the West. Bronze has always been the material for such figures, and this piece follows the tradition: a settled posture, closed eyes, and drapery resolved into a few calm planes. For international interiors it reads instantly as meditation and calm — the one subject that seems to slow the room down.

Craftsmanship: Lost-Wax Casting and Hand Patina

Every sculpture is hollow-cast in bronze by the traditional lost-wax method: a wax model is taken from the original master, encased in a ceramic shell, burnt out and replaced with molten bronze. The raw casting is cleaned, welded and refined entirely by hand before the patina is applied layer by layer and sealed. Because the patina is finished by hand, each piece varies slightly in tone and depth — a mark of genuine cast bronze rather than a sprayed imitation.

The face is finished under magnification: the closed eyes’ lids, the mouth’s line, and the beard’s flow are each cut by hand — the details that give the figure its presence.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who is the figure?

Bodhidharma (Damo), the monk credited with bringing Chan (Zen) Buddhism to China, famous for nine years of wall-facing meditation. Figures of Damo are a classic subject for tea rooms and studies.

2. Is this suitable for a tea room or meditation space?

It is one of our most requested subjects for exactly those settings — the seated calm of the figure suits tea tables, meditation corners and spa receptions. Choose the size by the surface it will stand on.

3. Can I order this piece in a different color?

Yes. The finish shown is the standard patina of this model, but the same sculpture can be produced in other tones — warm brown, antique gold, verdigris green or a custom two-tone patina. Hand patina is our standard process, so an alternative finish does not significantly affect lead time.

4. Is each sculpture exactly the same?

The casting comes from the same mold, so the form is consistent. The patina, however, is applied by hand, which means slight variations in tone between individual pieces — a normal characteristic of genuine cast bronze.

5. How is the sculpture packed for shipping?

Each piece is wrapped in protective foam and packed in a reinforced export carton; larger pieces travel in a foam-lined wooden crate. Wooden crates are standard for project shipments.
