Taihu Scholar Rock No.3 – Verdigris Bronze Sculpture

Hollow-cast in bronze by the traditional lost-wax method, 280 × 140 × 420 mm. A Taihu scholar rock in flowing verdigris teal with gold crests, finished with a hand-applied, sealed patina — ideal for living rooms, hotel lounges and reception areas.

Product Overview

This bronze takes a Taihu scholar rock in flowing verdigris teal with gold crests as its subject and edits everything else away — no clutter, no fuss, just the gesture and the presence of the form carried in hollow-cast bronze. a verdigris teal patina with polished gold accents is applied by hand and sealed. At 280 × 140 × 420 mm, it is sized for sideboards, consoles and reception counters.

The verdigris green is deepest in the channels and polished gold breaks along the highest ridges, exactly where a real stone would catch the sun.

The finish is sealed against fingerprints and daily handling. On a sideboard, console or reception counter, the piece works as a quiet anchor in the room — close enough to touch, solid enough to stay put, and simple to care for with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

Design Inspiration: The Scholar’s Rock, Reinterpreted

The Taihu stone has been the scholar’s companion since the Song dynasty, judged on four virtues — 瘦, 皱, 漏, 透. A rock on the desk was a mountain in the mind: a place to travel without leaving the studio. A bronze Taihu stone carries the same promise with none of the fragility, and its verdigris-and-gold surface makes it at home in a contemporary loft as in a literati study.

Craftsmanship: Lost-Wax Casting and Hand Patina

Every sculpture is hollow-cast in bronze by the traditional lost-wax method: a wax model is taken from the original master, encased in a ceramic shell, burnt out and replaced with molten bronze. The raw casting is cleaned, welded and refined entirely by hand before the patina is applied layer by layer and sealed. Because the patina is finished by hand, each piece varies slightly in tone and depth — a mark of genuine cast bronze rather than a sprayed imitation.

Verdigris and gold patinas are layered with resist work between them, then sealed — the goal is depth in the voids and brightness on the ridges.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a Taihu stone, for customers unfamiliar with it?

A limestone from Lake Tai near Suzhou, eroded into holes and channels over centuries, prized by Chinese scholars as the perfect desk-sized mountain. Our version is hollow-cast in bronze with the same character — the voids, the lean, the dignity — without the weight or fragility of stone.

2. Why bronze instead of real stone?

Bronze lets us control the silhouette precisely and add the gold accents that make the piece work in modern interiors. It is also far lighter and tougher than a comparable limestone, so it ships and displays safely.

3. Can I order this piece in a different color?

Yes. The finish shown is the standard patina of this model, but the same sculpture can be produced in other tones — warm brown, antique gold, verdigris green or a custom two-tone patina. Hand patina is our standard process, so an alternative finish does not significantly affect lead time.

4. What is the MOQ?

We work with both single-piece orders and bulk project orders. Contact us with your quantity and destination port for an accurate quotation and lead time.

5. How is the sculpture packed for shipping?

Each piece is wrapped in protective foam and packed in a reinforced export carton; larger pieces travel in a foam-lined wooden crate. Wooden crates are standard for project shipments.
