Crane Spreading Its Wings

Hollow-cast in bronze by the traditional lost-wax method, 473 × 400 × 536 mm. Silver crane with spread wings and red crown, finished with a hand-applied, sealed patina — ideal for living rooms, hotel lounges and reception areas.

Product Overview

Cast by the traditional lost-wax method and finished entirely by hand, this bronze crane presents silver crane with spread wings and red crown. a hand-applied patina gives the surface its depth, and the simplified planes keep the design readable in modern interiors. At 473 × 400 × 536 mm, it is sized for sideboards, consoles and reception counters.

The composition is built on three lines: the neck, the back, and the trailing leg. Each is drawn long and kept unbroken, so the bird reads as a single calligraphic stroke from the side. Feather groups are separated by shallow ridges rather than deep carving, letting the patina shade each layer.

The patina is built up in layers and sealed, which means tone varies slightly from piece to piece — the mark of genuine hand finishing rather than a sprayed imitation. On a sideboard, console or reception counter, it holds its own without competing with the furniture around it, and it needs no more care than an occasional soft-cloth dusting.

Design Inspiration: Grace, Patience and Long Life

Wading birds are built for sculpture: everything about them is line — the S of the neck, the stick of the legs, the flat plane of the folded wings — and the meanings travel with the form. The design keeps the drawing honest and lets the material do the rest: feathers suggested in shallow relief, the beak and crown polished as accents, the whole bird balanced on the smallest possible footprint.

Craftsmanship: Lost-Wax Casting and Hand Patina

Casting begins with the original master model. A wax copy is coated in ceramic, fired, and replaced with molten bronze in the lost-wax method our foundry has used for years. The hollow-cast bronze is then fettled and finished by hand — seams removed, detail sharpened, surface evened — before the patina is built up in successive washes and sealed to protect the tone. Small variations between pieces are the signature of hand finishing, not a defect.

The legs are the technical challenge: cast thin, they are straightened and trued by hand after casting, then checked for balance so the bird stands level on uneven surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does a crane sculpture symbolize?

Longevity, elegance and good news in the East; patience, grace and new beginnings in the West — the vigilant heron and the stork that delivers new life each add their own note. It is a popular gift for elders and weddings, and a natural fit for studies, lobbies and coastal or resort interiors.

2. Does the crane stand securely on its thin legs?

Yes. The legs are hollow-cast bronze and the weight is designed to sit directly over the supporting leg and base. On this model the casting is trued after finishing so the bird stands level; a felt pad can be added under the base on request.

3. Can I order this piece in a different color?

Yes. The finish shown is the standard patina of this model, but the same sculpture can be produced in other tones — warm brown, antique gold, verdigris green or a custom two-tone patina. Hand patina is our standard process, so an alternative finish does not significantly affect lead time.

4. What is the MOQ?

We work with both single-piece orders and bulk project orders. Contact us with your quantity and destination port for an accurate quotation and lead time.

5. How is the sculpture packed for shipping?

Each piece is wrapped in protective foam and packed in a reinforced export carton; larger pieces travel in a foam-lined wooden crate. Wooden crates are standard for project shipments.
